STATES' 9/11 RESPONSE DRAWS KUDOS, CRITICISM
John Nagy,
Staff Writer Stateline.org

Aug. 22, 2002

STRENGHTENED STATES?: It has become clear in the past year that poor airport security, dramatic flaws in counter-terrorism intelligence and a multitude of other problems left America vulnerable to attack by al Qaeda operatives on Sept. 11, 2001. What has also become clear is the importance of state government in responding to the threat of further terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

NURSERY PROGRAM AIDS JAILED MOMS IN FOUR STATES
Dave Ghose,
Special to Stateline.org

Sept. 24, 2002

CRIME AND COURTS: A small but growing number of states are using a new tool to keep women prison inmates from committing more crimes ? motherhood. In Ohio, Nebraska, New York and Washington, some women who give birth behind bars are allowed to keep their babies instead of giving up the child to a foster agency or a relative, as other states require. The programs appear to be helping women clean up their lives, although officials haven?t conducted major recidivism studies yet.

LAWMAKERS TO VOTERS:
RAISE YOUR OWN TAXES
Jason White, Staff Writer
Stateline.org

Oct. 2, 2002

Sidestepping a prickly political issue, lawmakers in some cash-starved states are asking voters to decide for themselves whether a tax increase is in order. "Most legislators would prefer to avoid the [tax] issue," said Dane Waters, executive director of the Initiative and Referendum Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that tracks ballot questions. One way to do this, short of not raising taxes at all, is to pass the issue and the political buck back to voters.

COLORADO DEMOCRATS HAVE A SHOT AT BREAKING GOP LOCK
Kyle Henley,
Special to Stateline.org

Oct. 3, 2002

From a political standpoint, Colorado Springs and surrounding El Paso County are known around the country for one thing: conservative Republican politics. Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-to-1. A Democrat hasn't won a General Assembly race in El Paso County since 1991. This year, however, Democrats have their best shot in years at breaking the GOP-lock, thanks largely to a reapportionment committee that was stacked in their favor.

Oct. 3, 2002

Yesterday the House of Representatives voted down (178-239) a bill to free churches from unconstitutional demands by the IRS. But, there is a silver lining.

Please let your Representative know today how you feel about his or her vote. See our Web page for a list of the Yeas and Nays, and a letter you can use.
