LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR'S REPORT

Lt. Governor Loren Leman
Juneau, AK
Feb. 12, 2004

WASHINGTON WEEK IN REVIEW:

This week's work in Washington, D.C. is somewhat reminiscent of my first trip, 36 years ago, when I was a high school senior. Then, as now, my time has been packed with meetings. I started the week meeting with John Katz, the longtime director of the Governor's office in our nation's capital; Jeff Staser, the federal co-chairman of the Denali Commission and Cindy Roberts, liaison to the Denali Commission from our Department of Community & Economic Development, to discuss Denali Commission funding and projects. Norm Mineta, Secretary of Transportation, and Marion Blakey, Administrator of the FAA, were key witnesses at an aviation issues hearing hosted by the Aerospace States Association, on whose executive board I serve. Most of the rest of this week has been consumed by meetings of the National Lieutenant Governors Association. Thirty of my counterparts from other states and U.S. possessions are present--and I have had opportunities to share our "Alaska" issues with them. I return to Alaska on Friday.

CONFERENCE OF ALASKANS:

As this Report goes out the Conference of Alaskans is voting on its final recommendations in Fairbanks. Check the website for further information.

After you go there, please see what Alaskans really want
JUST SAY NO !!!! )

SENATOR McCLINTOCK DRAWS CROWDS:

I enjoyed spending time with Senator Tom McClintock from California, who came to Alaska last week for speeches in Juneau and Anchorage. Senator McClintock, who ran a strong race in California's recent gubernatorial election, shared from his experiences in that State, and confirmed what we in Alaska should not do as we work to overcome our fiscal challenges.

LG MEETS LB:

My participation in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters (BB/BS) program officially began last Friday as I met my Little Brother at Harborview Elementary School. He is a bright young boy who loves reading, Spiderman, and spinach (me too!). We enjoyed getting to know each other and reading a few books. Accompanying us was Denny DeWitt from the Governor's Office, who will be backing me up as Big Brother when I am unable to be in Juneau. Thanks to Carolyn Porter and Lisa Gardner of BB/BS Southeast, and teacher Debbie Fagnant for their good work in making this match happen.

FAREWELL AUNT MARGARET:

My Aunt Margaret Lee, my mother's twin sister, died on Tuesday, February 10, at her home at Victory, northeast of Palmer, at the age of 84. Aunt Margaret had been quite fragile for some time--and was looking forward to her "homegoing"--but we still miss her. Carolyn and I offer our support and love to Uncle Dave and their children, my cousins, Brian, Dan and Sharon, as well as their families and friends. We plan to attend her memorial service and celebration of her life on Sunday afternoon.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Saturday, February 14, I will speak at the Kenai Lincoln Day dinner at the Log Cabin B&B in Kenai. Senator Ted Stevens addresses a joint session of the Legislature in Juneau on Monday, February 16. On Wednesday, February 18, I will speak at the Alaska Professional Design Council lunch in Juneau. APDC is an organization of architects, engineers and surveyors. On Thursday, February 19, I will address the Oil and Gas session at the PAC COM (Pacific Rim Construction, Oil and Mining) Conference at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage. I will also welcome attendees to the Northwest Shriners Convention that morning.
