FAITH IN FREEDOM NEWSLETTER

FAITH IN FREEDOM
October 2004

am37.gif - 3196 Bytes

As a champion of religious freedom, The Rutherford Institute frequently finds itself on the opposite side of the fence to Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, a group dedicated to ensuring that there is no promotion of religion by government or government officials. While the Rev. Barry Lynn, the ubiquitous executive director of Americans United, praises The Rutherford Institute’s positions in regards to anti-terrorism legislation and some free speech questions, he has been one of the Institute’s strongest and most vocal opponents on the issue of separation of church and state. In the spirit of a free exchange of ideas, this month’s Faith in Freedom Newsletter serves up an exclusive OldSpeak interview with the controversial Barry Lynn. This month’s Faith in Freedom Newsletter also takes a look at an endangered political species: the pro-life Democrat. Oldspeak Editor Jayson Whitehead chats with Kristen Day, the executive director of Democrats for Life of America (DFLA), about what it means to be pro-life in a party that has grown more strident in its support for abortion as a fundamental right.

You’ll also read about some of our ongoing cases and alerts. For example, in our continual quest to guard the rights of all citizens from overreaching government action, Rutherford Institute attorneys have filed an appeal with the Third Circuit Court of Appeals challenging a highly intrusive survey administered to high school and middle school students without parental notification or consent. The Rutherford Institute also recently signed on to a letter to members of the U.S. Senate expressing concern over an amendment to the National Intelligence Reform Act of 2004 that contains the largest expansion of federal powers since the USA PATRIOT Act and covers issues that are far beyond the scope of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations—issues that the coalition of concerned organizations feels should be debated next year during the debate on the Patriot Act.

Finally, we hope you’ll take some time to read some of John Whitehead’s recent commentaries. His piece on the "Thought Police and the American Community Survey" provoked quite a lot of reaction and outrage.

Again, thank you for standing with us in our efforts to safeguard our civil liberties. am37.jpg - 31927 Bytes
